The Entire Situation was supported by the University of California Los Angeles Department of Architecture and Urban Design as part of the 2013-2014 UCLA A.UD Teaching Fellowship.

The Entire Situation is an installation that integrates everyday aspects of construction and building information modeling into a conceptual design framework. The project presents a series of rooms as free-standing walls to suggest that material thickness is the site of an architectural problem where multiple forms of knowledge meet, specifically as the project operates across digital platforms, from 3D modeling to information management software to a piece of construction. Rather than smooth over the digital aberrations that are produced, mainly at the intersection of surfaces, The Entire Situation locates these moments as sites for design.

The project examines the kinds of problems that arise when the networks of building construction, digital management software, material distribution, and circulation are forced to confront conceptual issues. These networks have inhabited the architect’s office for some time; they’ve been smuggled in through things like product samples, industry catalogs, material libraries, Building Information Modeling, and mock-ups. And today we have large systems of material distribution, product, supply chains, big box retail and specialty fabrication. Studs, molding, gypsum board, and paint were used to index, track and account for differences across softwares and hardwares.
